When:March 01, 2010
Mothers who gain more than 14 kg during pregnancy more often have babies with a high birth weight. This leads to the babies being more at risk of overweight later in life. UMCG PhD student Carianne L’Abée established this in her doctoral research and advocates informing pregnant women about these facts. L’Abée will be awarded a PhD by the University of Groningen on 10 March 2010.

In the Netherlands, no fewer than 360,000 people take anticoagulant medication, for example to reduce the risks of a heart attack or stroke. A quarter of those patients struggle with major swings in their blood values, making the drugs less effective and increasing the chances of serious side effects. UMCG researcher Nic Veeger has discovered that the first thirty days of the treatment can predict whether someone will react well to the drugs. In addition, a minor bleed shortly after the start of the treatment is an indication that a patient will have major problems later. Veeger will be awarded a PhD in Medical Sciences by the University of Groningen on 17 February 2010.

When:February 02, 2010

Some of the resources invested by the pharmaceutical industry in promoting new drugs could be spent more effectively. ‘Drugs manufacturers cannot do without promotional activities, but at the same time there’s a lot of ignorance about the compilation of the ideal mix of promotional activities in the pharmaceutical market’, says Sara Kremer. She will be awarded a PhD by the University of Groningen on 11 February.

When:January 27, 2010
Walking or cycling for half an hour four times a week is sufficient to eliminate important obesity risks in adolescents. Even if they do not lose weight as a result of the exercise programme, the chances of developing diabetes appear to be significantly reduced. The relatively light exercise programmes are easy for obese adolescents to keep up. This has been revealed by research conducted by Gert-Jan van der Heijden, who will be awarded a PhD by the University of Groningen on 3 February 2010.

When:January 20, 2010
A new classification system that has been developed by the UMCG enables doctors to establish the cause of death in 80 percent of stillborn children. Gynaecologist in training Fleurisca Korteweg and her colleagues developed and tested this system and established which examinations are needed to determine the cause of death. This has lead to a clinical guideline that will be introduced nationally. These results will hopefully prevent a number of stillbirths in the future. Korteweg will be awarded a PhD by the University of Groningen on 27 January.

When:January 20, 2010
In PNAS scientific journal (Early Edition, January 19, 2010) University of Groningen chronobiologist Prof. Martha Merrow proves that Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker’s yeast) has all the classic characteristics of a biological clock. As Saccharomyces cerevisia has been the standard model system in genetic biology for some time now, as a consequence chronobiology now has access to a plethora of research tools and methods developed in that regard. Research into the molecular mechanisms of the biological clock will quickly gain momentum, Merrow predicts.

Perhaps it’s time that all cyclists were made to wear helmets.’ Nijboer will be awarded a PhD in Medical Sciences on 18 November 2009.

When:November 04, 2009
People who are allergic to wasps see a significant improvement in their quality of life if they choose immunotherapy. Although they have to go to hospital several times a year for a number of years to have an injection, they no longer have to keep a sharp eye out for wasps. That’s much nicer than always having to have an auto-injector with you to counteract the effects of a wasp sting. This has been revealed by research conducted by Hanneke Oude Elberink, internist-allergist at the University Medical Center Groningen. She will be awarded a PhD by the University of Groningen on 11 November 2009.
