What about?
The expression “Race for the surface” was first introduced by A.G. Gristina to describe the series of events that occur after implantation of a biomaterial into the human body.A critical race involves competition between pathogenic microorganisms in the wound site and host tissue cells attempting to integrate the implant. If the race is won by the microorganisms, infection generally occurs and we all know that eventually the fate of the implant will be removal.
Biomaterials implant-related infections remain the number one cause of implant failure, despite all research efforts. This mini-symposium will address the different aspects of implant-related infection and its prevention: from the fundamentals of bioadhesion, development of antimicrobial surfaces to the clinical aspects of these infections.
Objectives/goals
:All participants are asked to contribute intellectual and other creative input to inspiring new ideas, new approaches and new information to this challenging problem.
Questions such as whether or not a successful colonization by tissue cells might prevent infection can be discussed in a dedicated, amicable environment, in which all speakers will be easily accessible throughout the symposium.
Symposium format:
Informal with participation limited to ~50 people. Emphasis will be on exchange and discussion, and the program is set up such that we try to allow as many participants as possible to give a presentation.
We will distinguish three different types of scheduled presentations and off-the-floor presentations:
40 min key-note addresses will be given by:
-
Prof.Dr. Martin Cormican
University
of Galway
, Department of Medical Microbiology
“Implant-related infections in clinical practice”
-
Dr. Bas A.J. Zaat
Academic
Medical Center Amsterdam, Department of Medical Microbiology
"Tissue surrounding biomaterials as a "Safe Heaven" for bacteria causing biomaterial-associated infection".
-
Prof.Dr. James D. Bryers
University
of Washington
, Seattle, Department of Bioengineering
“Emerging Anti-Biofilm Biomaterial Strategies”
Selected lecture:
Participants selected by the organizers will be invited to give a lecture (20 min)
Mini lecture:
Participants selected by the organizers will be invited to give a 10 min talk
Off-the-floor:
Opportunity
will be given for 5 min “Hot topic” or “point-counter point” off-the-floor-addresses after each session.
Admission is closed, the number of 50 participants is reached.....
