Department of Artificial Intelligence, RUG

The Department of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Groningen is involved in research activities in the area of artificial intelligence and cognitive engineering. Inherently interdisciplinary in nature, research in the department employs broad concepts from computer science, biology, psychology, linguistics, the humanities and more in order to develop computational models with embedded perceptual, cognitive, and behavioral control functions. Fundamental research is conducted in four major areas of artificial intelligence: cognitive modeling, multi-agent systems, autonomous perceptive systems and sensory cognition.

The research group that focuses on autonomous perceptive systems, studies the nature of problems that such systems encounter in their environment. Specific areas benefiting from advancements in this kind of research include robotics, robot vision and handwriting recognition. One of the group's major projects is the development of Monk - a system capable of searching words or phrases in handwritten historical collections. Target provides its infrastructure for testing and future improvements in the Monk system. Target partners also work together with Monk developers on

  • scalability of large data files
  • handling unstructured information
  • unpredictable queries
