Public interest

The data avalanche originating from sensor networks in the broadest sense of the word threatens to come to a grinding halt. This is true as well for networks that are very directly relevant to society. Both intelligent processing and (public) access to high-quality information resulting from these networks is being compromised.

The public interest of the technology that will be developed within Target can be found in supporting the development of the Internet and accessibility of data of projects such as:

  1. Large-scale sensor network systems (a.o. IJkdijk)
  2. Long term preservation
  3. National archives
  4. Health - medical data - DNA
  5. Business admin
  6. Traffic management

Explanation

Ad 4. LifeLines is a large project in which regional, social and other environmental effects on health are being investigated. The collaboration between Target and LifeLines will lead to improved insights, and to knowledge that will be more widely applicable in other (medical) applications.

Ad 6. New developments, such as Rijkswaterstaat’s (Department/Ministry of Waterways and Public Works) Nationaal Datawarehouse voor verkeersgegevens (National Data Warehouse for traffic data), are now also being confronted with very large challenges with regard to the large amounts of (streaming) data. For such social developments, Target will be able to offer solutions.
