All students from the University of Groningen can apply for a multi-faculty exchange programme. It is important that you first contact the International Office or the International Officer of your faculty. The exchange programmes are offered at an undergraduate level only, except for the exchange program with Osaka University. This means that master students cannot apply for a multi-faculty exchange programme.

Students must meet the following requirements:

  1. You must have passed the propaedeutic exam.
  2. The courses you wish to take abroad must be discussed with your study advisor prior to applying and the program you wish to take abroad must fit within the curriculum of your current study programme.
  3. You must have passed one of the following English language tests:
    • Language test from the University Language Centre: score C2 or C1, only one score B2 is allowed (before 2008: score A or B, only one score C is allowed). Please note that this test is not considered valid by the Australian universities.
    • IELTS score: 6.5.
    • Toefl score: 580 CBT 230.

Application procedure

The application forms can be obtained:

You can submit the application form at the International Office of your faculty. The application should contain the following (additional) documents:

  • The filled out application forms.
  • An official transcript of grades in English.
  • A copy of your propaedeutic degree.
  • The official English language certificate.
  • A letter of motivation written specifically for the university where you wish to go. You must discuss the study program with your study advisor prior to applying.
  • A curriculum vitae.
  • A letter of recommendation from a professor, a study advisor or director of your study programme.

Note: Incomplete applications will NOT be considered.

Selection procedure

The International Office of your faculty or the International Officer at your faculty will make the first selection of applications based on the aforementioned criteria, motivation, recommendations, and grades. The Office for International Relations receives a small selection of the best applications from the International Offices of all faculties by the beginning of February. If necessary, the Office for International Relations will make a final selection of students to put forward for the exchange programme. In case they are unable to place you at your university of choice, they will try to make you another offer. The faculty will also make an effort to try and place you in one of the European exchange programmes.

Application procedure at host university

Please keep in mind that if you are put forward as an exchange student, you will need to fill out another set of application forms for the partner university. It is always up to the partner university to accept your application. The Office for International Relations will inform you once you have been selected to go on an exchange programme.
