Studying abroad

A stay abroad is a useful experience but it may be difficult to find the necessary funding. In most situations, you can appeal to the Marco Polo Fund and the Groningen University Fund (GUF). If their contributions are not sufficient, a private fund may help out.

Letter of recommendation from a student counsellor

If you are planning to apply to a private fund for financial support for an internship or other activity abroad, you may need a letter of recommendation from a student counsellor of the Student Service Centre. Most funds require a complete picture of your circumstances, which is why the student counsellor will discuss the request form with you. The student counsellor will then add a letter of recommendation to the completed form.

Funding request deadlines

Many private funds have a strict application deadline of at least 3 months, which you must take into consideration. Do not wait for the confirmation of your internship before submitting your request to a fund. Instead, state in your request that you will forward the confirmation as soon as you have received it. However, this is not a guarantee that the fund will give you a grant.

Please bring all the information listed below to your appointment with the student counsellor. If some of it is lacking, the student counsellor cannot help you!

Monthly income

Your own contribution should be at least € 840 per month. This amount is the sum of the grant or loan from DUO, income from work, savings, student travel pass allowance, etc.

Allocated or expected other grants or contributions from other funds, for example the Marco Polo Fund or the Groningen University Fund
Monthly spending

Specification of your average monthly spending, taking into account:

  • cost of the return ticket
