Curriculum Vitae

Overview

Killian McCarthy is currently reading for a PhD at the Rijksuniversiteit (University of) Groningen, and for a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at the University of London. His research interests include: strategy and innovation, business and industrial organization, mergers and acquisitions, law and economics, commercial, contract and corporate law, money laundering and criminal activity.

Education

Killian began his studies with a Bachelor at the National University of Ireland, for which he took classes at University College Cork (Ireland). He studied for a double-major, and graduated (in 2005) with a 'Grade-One First-Class Honours'.

In 2006, Killian obtained a Masters (MSc) in Economics 'cum laude' while at the Universiteit Utrecht School of Economics (the Netherlands). In his research there he conducted a (micro-theoretical) analysis of the European airline industry, which considered the effects of networks and strategic alliances amongst firms on both competitiveness and consumer welfare.

In 2006 Killian entered the 'Multidisciplinary Economics Research (MPhil/PhD) Programme' at the Universiteit Utrecht Tjallings Koopmans Research Institute (the Netherlands), and as part of this he took classes at both the Technische Universiteit Delft, and the Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (the Netherlands). He also spent time at the Universität Wien (Vienna, Austria), and worked there at the Institut für Volkswirtschaftslehre. His research at this time centred on the analysis of mergers and acquisitions, and on the role of corporate strategy in predicting the relative success and/or failure of these ventures. He graduated in Sept 2008 'cum laude', and earned an (MPhil) Research Masters with the highest honours.

In his current project, and with the assistance of his supervisors (Prof. dr. W.A Dolfsma of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen and Dr. U. Weitzel of Universiteit Utrecht and the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Jena, Germany), Killian hopes to extend his research in the field of strategy, and in the study of performance in mergers and acquisitions.
