PhD Project: Occupational Hazard? The Relation between Occupations and Fertility

This project focuses on the relation between occupational characteristics and fertility. Previous research investigating female employment and fertility has focused mainly on labor force status and working hours, with less attention to how aspects such as occupational gender segregation and occupational tasks or working conditions impact fertility. This project will combine insights from sociology, demography, and psychology to engage in an interdisciplinary examination of the impact of occupations on fertility intentions, attempts and outcomes. The study will be of cross-national comparative nature, drawing upon European data such as the European Social Survey as well as Dutch data.

Supervisors: Melinda Mills (RUG) and Harry Ganzeboom (VU)

Funding: This project is partially financed by a grant from the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences

Contract period: September 2008 – September 2012
