Hans Christiaan Klein is working as psychiatrist in the department of Psychiatry of the University Medical Centre in Groningen, The Netherlands. In addition he works in the department of Molecular Medicine and Nuclear Imaging conducting brain studies. He acquired his PhD in 1992 and his medical degree in 1994, both in the University of Groningen. He was head of the clinic and as associate trainer for psychiatric residents in the department for mental health in Groningen, the Netherlands. He is currently working primarily for old age psychiatric patients.
Primary topic of his research is the pursuit of inflammatory processes potentially responsible for mental disorders. In addition he investigates latent infections such as herpes viruses as potential trigger for the inflammatory process. Primary tool to investigate infectious and inflammatory processes and the associated biochemical changes is positron emission tomography. This technique offers the unique opportunity to link mood and behavioral dysfunctioning to metabolic changes in the brain. Hans Klein is also involved in epidemiological studies linking early exposition to viruses and vulnerability to psychosomatic diseases during upbringing and aging.
