The digitization of academic information is becoming ever more important.
The Digital Library Facilities Department plays an important role in this process.
This is the eve of an era when universities will increasingly take on the role of publishers.
This ‘revolution’ is mainly enabled by the development of the World Wide Web.
The WWW has made it easy and cheap for everyone to share material with other internet users.
However, until recently it was rather difficult to develop shared services on top of these often database-driven systems to enable information from similar sources to be shared, distributed and made searchable.
The Open Archive Initiative (
OAI
) has changed this.
OAI is an international initiative for the development and promotion of standards aimed at open and efficient distribution of information.
OAI is grounded in the wish to establish better access to electronic journals and articles.
In 2003, all Dutch universities decided to cooperate in the DARE project.
The Digital Academic Repositories (
DARE
) programme aims to make all research results available digitally.
The National Library (
KB
), the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (
KNAW
) and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (
NWO
) also participate in this unique partnership.
The
SURF
foundation is responsible for coordinating the programme.
Almost all repositories are driven by
WildFire-software
.
Examples:
- The
Dissertation website
- The
Seed Atlas
- The
Carmen website
See also the
Online Logbook of the Repository work group
and ‘
Repositories in Groningen
’.
WildFire (Repository software):
-
WildFire is currently being used for almost all RUG repositories.
WildFire enables the user to save documents quickly and easily and display them directly in a browser in their own layout.
Wildfire supports many different metadata sets and languages.
Thumbnails can be added to directories, OAI records and files.
You can download a light version from
MyWildFire
.
Archipol
:
-
The Archipol project aims to archive as many websites of Dutch political parties as possible.
In 2000, the Documentation Centre for Dutch Political Parties (
DNPP
) in co-operation with the University Library Groningen started archiving the websites of Dutch political parties under the project name Archipol.
This project was supported by grants from the
SURF
Foundation within the framework of the
IWI
(Innovation of Academic Information Services) and the University of Groningen.
