Bram P. Buunk is since 2005 Academy Professor on behalf the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), and since 2004 a member of this same academy. His main current interest is the application of evolutionary theorizing to human social behavior, particularly altruism, mate selection, jealousy, and rivalry. In addition, he is interested in the cross-cultural aspects of these phenomena. He collaborates with scientists in various countries, particularly in Spain and South America. Much of his previous work concerned basic research on social exchange and social comparison in applied areas, including professional burnout, jealousy, absenteeism, AIDS-prevention, loneliness, depression, marital satisfaction, well-being among the elderly, and coping with cancer. He has over 350 scientific publications in a variety of journals and books, and has supervised 35 doctoral dissertations. Prof. Buunk has held many administrative and managerial positions, including the membership of the Scientific Board for Social Oncology of the Dutch Cancer Foundation (NKB-KWF), and of the Scientific Board of the Dutch AIDS Foundation. Currently he is, among others, a vice-chair of the Program Committee on Succesful Aging, and a member of the Program Committee on Evolution and Behavior, both of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).
