The Department of Sociology at the University of Groningen, together with the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences and the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS) at Utrecht University, offer a two-year specialization in Sociology within the Research Master ‘Human Behaviour in Social Contexts’. The entire programme is in English, with a strong emphasis on both theoretically and methodologically advanced research in sociology and the social sciences in general.

 

Special features of this Research Master include:

 

• A strong focus on the integration of social theory, empirical research, and methods of data-analysis.
  
• Extensive hands on experience in contemporary social science data analysis (e.g., multilevel modelling, social network analysis, event history analysis).
  
• Intensive supervision from internationally acknowledged experts. Due to the selection of only a limited number of students, students benefit from interaction and collaboration within a research group. Students develop their own research topics closely linked to ongoing cutting-edge research at our department.
  
• Study visit to external (inter)national research institute. Students have the opportunity for an external research visit, which in the past has included visits to national Dutch research institutes and Universities in France, Finland and Estonia.
  
• Students gain hands on experience in writing publishable research article(s) in English, with a master’s thesis written in the form of (at least one) publishable research article. In fact, our experience shows that most of our students have finished the programme with at least one publishable article.
