Theoretical and Empirical Linguistics

Annual Report 1999

CLCG

This research group studies the syntactic structure of the human language capacity and the way it is embedded in our general cognitive capacity. The 1999 - 2003 research program is motivated, among other things, by the so-called logical problem of language acquisition and the evidence comes from comparative and typological research of the synchronic and diachronic variation among natural languages.

Members: Ackema (postdoc), Bok-Bennema, De Haan, Kampers-Manhe, Koster (coordinator), Van Zonneveld, Zwart.

Research Results

In accordance with the 1999 - 2003 program, various approaches were followed, the majority of the research activities directed towards the further development of a paradigm combining elements of Chomsky's minimalism and Kayne's antisymmetry theory. Bok-Bennema's research focused on the Spanish Mittelfeld and the hypothesis that V-movement in Spanish involves remnant VP-movement. Furthermore, she elaborated (with B. Kampers-Manhe) a theory of morphology in which antisymmetric syntactico-semantic structures are mapped onto morpho-phonological adjunction structures, with special attention to Romance compounding. De Haan continued his scientific grammar of Frisian. As a spin-off, he published on the Frisian vowel system and syllabic sonorants. Kampers-Manhe continued her work with Bok-Bennema on Romance compounding (see under Bok-Bennema above). She also collaborated with French and Dutch linguists in a research project called PICS (financed by CNRS and NWO) on the Syntax-Semantics interface (subprojects: adverbs and information structure, more specifically the postposition of the subject in French). Koster developed a theory of Massive Pied Piping and used that to solve the various problems of extraposition and to give a novel account of the word order differences between English and Dutch. Van Zonneveld completed two articles on Gapping, one on Gapping as underspecification and one as a reaction to Van Duinhoven's Gapping as reduction involving comments. Zwart continued his research on the multiple specifier hypothesis, developing empirical arguments against replacing multiple projections by multiple specifiers from the domain of restructuring. He also developed a theory about the limited range of variation in head movement phenomena.
