Research interests

Understanding immunology of ageing in relation to the development of age-associated autoimmune diseases in the elderly. The focus of the research is on definition of (cellular) biomarkers as predictors of disease, relapse and recovery in giant cell arteritis, polymyalgia rheumatica and RA. The Groningen Longevity / SENEX cohort supported by the UMCG Healthy ageing initiative was set up to study ageing- associated immune alterations. A scientific collaboration was set-up with the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (Bilthoven, The Netherlands) to study booster vaccinations in pre elderly individuals. In collaboration with researchers at RadboudUMC Nijmegen a collaboration was set-up to study the effect of exercise on the immune system in the elderly.
