The Kapteyn Astronomical Institute of the University of Groningen, as part of NOVA, the Netherlands Research School for Astronomy, the coalition of the four Dutch university astronomical institutes, has been ranked as a world-leading astronomical institute by a recent international evaluation board. The evaluation board, consisting of top astronomers, including a Nobel Prize winner, categorised NOVA and its institutes as “exemplary”.

The board stated that the “Kapteyn Astronomical Institute has significantly improved its research strength and quality” over the past five years, pointing out specifically Kapteyn research in the Milky Way, the Epoch of Reionization, and stellar populations of local galaxies, with “an excellent and steadily improving PhD program with no substantive weaknesses,” and that “the result of these positive changes has been a rejuvenation of the department.” Regarding outreach and societal impact, the board “judged the whole range of Kapteyn’s activities to bring science and an understanding of the Universe to the public to be excellent”, and furthermore that “in the strategic planning of their valorization and in the interfacing with the broader data science community Kapteyn is exemplary, and leading within the Netherlands.”

The evaluation board concluded by stating that “Kapteyn is very well positioned for the future.” The Kapteyn Astronomical Institute is very proud to meet the highest international standards and further strengthen its place at the top rung of astronomy and astrophysics world-wide.
