Bettina Reitz-Joose and Han Lamers receive science communication prize

25 September 2017

ICOG researcher Bettina Reitz-Joosse and Han Lamers (KU Leuven) won the Jaarprijs Wetenschapscommunicatie 2017 (Annual Prize Science Communication 2017) for their communication campaign around the publication of their research into the Codex Fori Mussolini. The prize was awarded by the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België (Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts) and the Young Academy.

The Codex Fori Mussolini, a Latin text about Mussolini’s Italy, was hidden under a marble obelisk in Rome in 1932. Reitz-Joose and Lamers translated the text and analysed it in their book The Codex Fori Mussolini: A Lating Text of Italian Fascism. In the book, the researchers unravel the cultural meaning ofthe parchment which is still buried underneath the obelisk.

The Jaarprijs Wetenschapscommunicatie is awarded annually to researchers who have worked intensively on a project in the context of science communication. According to the selection committee, the research of Reitze-Joosse and Lamers was selected because of its very well thought through media communication campaign in Flanders and the Netherlands and the international recognition it received. The winners will receive their prize on Thursday 16 November in the Academy Palace in Brussels.
