The Young Arts Network (YARN) is looking for 4 members!

In order to further strengthen the function of the Faculty of Arts as a breeding ground for talent, the Faculty Board has decided to set up a faculty body for (and by) early career scientists: the Young ARts Network (YARN). The scheduled starting date of YARN is 1 September 2017.

In the founding year, YARN consists of 8 members, including the 4 faculty members of the University’s Young Academy Groningen (YAG): Merel Keijzer, Joost Keizer, Bettina Reitz-Joosse and Martijn Wieling. We are looking for 4 additional members.

What does the Young Arts Network do?

YARN brings together enthusiastic, ambitious and talented junior (early career) scientific staff to:

• stimulate interdisciplinary cooperation (both in education and research);
• promote exchanges of experience and best practices (both in education and research);
• help new colleagues find their way both within the faculty organization and in their careers;
• give early career academic staff a voice in the faculty research and education policy.

The members of YARN undertake, among other things, the following activities:

• Co-organizing faculty research meetings;
• Providing interdisciplinary peer support in the preparation of research proposals;
• Consultation with the Dean and advising the Faculty Board.

Who can apply?

• The YARN is looking for members who meet the following conditions and criteria:
• Academic staff member (Postdoc, UD, UHD, Hgl) of the Faculty of Arts with an appointment at least until 1 September 2019;
• The date of obtaining your doctorate should be no more than 10 years before start of the YARN membership (starting date first year: September 1, 2017). This period can be extended by a maximum of two years in case of pregnancy (12 months per child), sickness or parental leave (in case of formal reduction of working hours).
• Availability of approximately 3 hours a week.
• Academic excellence, as demonstrated by:

1. Indicators of excellent research, such as prizes, scholarships, memberships, top publications, invitations to act as keynote speaker;
2. Indicators of excellent education, such as excellent educational evaluations, (nomination for and / or award of) educational prizes and scholarships.
3. Indicators of societal impact, such as projects conducted with societal partners, publications in journals, prizes.

Please note : candidates are not expected to excel in all three areas mentioned above. The aim is to achieve is a balanced dissemination of expertise between the YARN members. Also, the representation of various disciplines based on the differences between the three faculty research institutes (GIA, CLCG and ICOG) is taken into account: the aim is that each institute is represented by at least two members.

The YARN membership appointment is for two years, with an exception for the foundation year: this round, 4 members (on the basis of voluntary registration and internal selection) will be appointed for three years. In that way, the number of members in the second year can be extended to 12, while continuity is guaranteed.

How can I apply?

Interested candidates are asked to submit two documents:

• A motivation letter (max. 1 A4) indicating why you are eligible for the (founding) membership of YARN and what contribution you would like to make.
• A curriculum vitae (max. 2 A4) in which you mention – in addition to your contact information and doctorate completion date – relevant indicators of excellence in the three academic pillars (research, education and societal impact).
