[English version below] De funderingsfase van de Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health (AJSPH) is in volle gang.

Staying healthy together longer: Victor Verrijp’s vision on AJSPH

The foundation phase of the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health (AJSPH) is well under way. The next question is how we are going to make AJSPH the go-to public health platform. Victor Verrijp, Director Policy and Strategy at UMCG, plays an important part in this. In this blog he explains his role and shares his vision on AJSPH.

Realising AJSPH together
From the beginning, Verrijp saw a lot of potential in AJSPH. “I was interviewed during the exploration phase about my opinion on the foundation of AJSPH,” Verrijp tells, “I was enthusiastic immediately.” A few weeks ago, Jochen Mierau and Annechien Pronk, the drivers of AJSPH from the RUG, asked him if he wanted to play a part in the realisation of AJSPH. “I immediately said yes,” Verrijp says. “I see this as a project of the RUG, of which UMCG is a part. It is in line with Healthy Ageing, an important spearhead of both organisations. That is why I feel it is my duty, in line with my position, to help realise AJSPH. And I really enjoy doing it too.” Verrijp continues: “It is, however, not a straight-forward project assignment, but fortunately there are a lot of people who want to commit to the theme of public health.”

Staying healthy together longer
How can we stay healthy together for longer? Verrijp states that this is the most important societal issue, which is the focal point for AJSPH. This is more than just a health issue. “Through Healthy Ageing we started looking more and more at the patient’s life cycle. This included the person’s lifestyle before and after treatment,” tells Verrijp, “after all, after treatment you want someone to remain healthy for as long as possible.” Just treating diseases is not enough to make sure that people age healthily. There are many factors that affect health, such as activity, healthy food and social participation. This causes this issue to cover an enormous amount of areas of expertise, which requires a multidisciplinary approach.

Multidisciplinary collaboration
According to Verrijp, the realisation that multidisciplinary collaborations in healthcare are important, is increasing. Where not only the administrators of organisations within a region keep in touch, but specifically the professionals of these organisations. “We have achieved a lot through specialisation, but we will achieve a lot more through multidisciplinary collaboration,” states Verrijp. “This is exactly where AJSPH can play an important part. With AJSPH we want to connect the different areas of expertise with each other and organise interesting research projects by coordinating academic interest. This will also enable us to utilise financing more effectively.” He also wants to pass on the accumulated knowledge to the next generation of researchers: “What I hope is that we can make the knowledge that we develop through the multidisciplinary projects at the RUG available through bachelor and master programmes.”

The focal point for regionally-specific questions
Verrijp explains why the north of the Netherlands in particular will benefit from the connection that AJSPH wants to achieve: “We live in an extraordinary region. We are faced with a lot of issues, like the large number of chronic diseases and the earthquake problems. That is why a lot of parties within the region come to us with questions in the field of public health and look for help answering them. Such as questions about the implementation of scientific knowledge or the measurement of the effectiveness of certain interventions.” Verrijp sees the AJSPH as the ideal focal point where these regionally-specific questions may end up. Because the AJSPH is a movement that different faculties are linked to, the questions can be answered with a multidisciplinary approach, providing better solutions.

Point of address between society and science
The added result of a more multidisciplinary collaboration is that the implementation of knowledge is faster and easier. “The RUG and the UMCG have developed a lot of knowledge in the field of prevention, but further strides need to be made on how to deploy this knowledge,” Verrijp says. “We want society to feel the effects. That is why AJSPH not only performs scientific research, but places valorisation at the centre. With valorisation and consulting, AJSPH can demonstrate that society can benefit from the multidisciplinary research that we are going to conduct. And I also hope then that we will be receiving questions from society that we hadn’t thought of yet ourselves.” And because of that, Verrijp sees AJSPH as a point of address between society and science.

AJSPH is facing an enormous challenge, but Verrijp is confident: “There is a lot of energy surrounding AJSPH and I feel a lot of enthusiasm. Not only with Jochen and Annechien, but among a lot of different people.”
