28 March 2017

On 20-21 March 2017 the students of the LLM Energy and Climate Law visited Brussels under the supervision of Dr Ruven Fleming. The two-day trip was part of the course Energy Investment and Trade Law within the LLM programme.

On the first day the group visited the Energy Charter Secretariat. They were welcomed by Dr Ernesto Bonafe, Dr Marat Terterov and their staff on the premises of the Secretariat. The topics discussed covered the role and function of the Energy Charter Treaty, the 2015 International Energy Charter, Investment Protection under the Energy Charter Treaty and the expansion of the Treaty to the East Africa region.

On the second day the students met at the representation of Benelux-countries in Brussels. Jan Molema and his staff presented the mission and vision of the Benelux as economic organization to further the well-being of citizens in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Afterwards, Niall Lawlor from the Directorate General Trade of the European Commission shared his insights on EU external energy policy from a Trade Law perspective with the group. His presentation was followed by a talk of Jeffery Piper from the Directorate General Energy of the European Commission, who approached the same topic from an Energy Law perspective.

The two day trip was part of the LLM Energy and Climate Law curriculum. More information on the LLM may be found here.
