Preliminary Programme 2017

Educational experience

Ageing poses an increasing burden on European societies. Currently, treatment of age-related diseases is highly demanding in time and money. The on-going demographic ageing of the population will require substantial reorganization of the health care budgets and infrastructure of hospitals and nursing homes. Particularly, neurodegenerative diseases resulting in dementia and motor disability urgently require our attention.

Each day of the summer school is organized around one specific ageing brain topic, e.g. developing brain, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, neuroimaging, brain-influencing factors of the older brain, neuropsychiatry and medicine in the future. The different aspects will be approached in a broad way: clinical, pathophysiology, technological and social aspects will all be part of the Summer School.

One day of the summer school there will be a joined programme with the other Summer Schools: global health and paediatrics. This day we are going to focus on the Zika-virus from the view of neurosciences, global health and gynaecology. In the afternoon there will be a joined Ethics programme.

During the programme there will be interactive lectures from professional speakers, experts and patients. There will also be a lot of workshops, for example about using an EEG for neuro-imaging. Besides this, there will be a trip to Twente. We will visit there the technical faculty where they do a lot of research in innovative, technical medical aspects.

Group assignments are an integral and critical part of the programme. During these sessions, participants will work in small, multidisciplinary teams on group assignments. With this group assignment participants will learn about scientific skills and how to use them in developing a medical product.
