Research master programme

The Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen offers eight Research Master's tracks. These two-year tracks are developed for highly talented students and train them to carry out independent academic research. The tracks prepare students for:

  • further study and training aimed at the successful completion of a PhD thesis in one of the fields listed below
  • a career as an independent researcher in the public or private sector (academic research or applied research).

The Faculty offers the following Research Master's tracks:

All research master's tracks are two-year programmes (120 ECTS). Each programme consists of four components: a component ‘knowledge and understanding', consisting of four core modules (40 ECTS), a component ‘theory and methodology’, consisting of two in-depth modules (20 ECTS), a specialisation phase consisting of three tutorials (30 ECTS) and a master thesis (30 ECTS including thesis classes and a research proposal). The component ‘knowledge and understanding’ aims at broadening the students’ knowledge of the discipline, and at acquainting them with the latest methods and techniques; the students will also perform specific research assignments.
