Research profile dr. H.B. (Bart) Verheij

Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Engineering (ALICE)

Bart Verheij is a lecturer at the University of Groningen, Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Engineering (ALICE). His research focuses on artificial intelligence and argumentation, often with the law as domain of application. He currently leads a research project using Bayesian networks for the modeling of arguments, scenarios and probabilities in forensic reasoning with evidence. He is editor-in-chief of the journal Argument and Computation. He is affiliated faculty at the CodeX Center for Legal Informatics (Stanford University), following a residential fellowship (2013-2014). He is vice-president of the International Association for AI and Law, vice-president/secretary of the JURIX Foundation for Legal Knowledge-Based Systems, member of the Steering Committee for the International Conference series on Computational Models of Argument, and board member of the Benelux Association for Artificial Intelligence (BNVKI), each with an associated conference series (ICAIL, JURIX, COMMA, BNAIC). He served as program chair of the Fourteenth International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Law (ICAIL 2013, Rome), of the Fourth International Conference on Computational Models of Argument (COMMA 2012, Vienna), and of the Fourteenth Annual JURIX Conference (2001, Amsterdam). He co-organized the workshop Studying Evidence in the Law: Formal, Computational and Philosophical Methods (at ICAIL 2015, San Diego) and the symposium Trial With and Without Mathematics at Stanford University (2014).
