Research Epidemiology
University Medical Center Groningen

Epidemiology training

Epidemiology is taught in the curricula for medical science, dentistry, in the research master programme, and in postgraduate training. In addition, we guide students to become a recognised epidemiologist.

Research projects for Bachelor and Master students

There are options for students in a Junior Scientific Masterclass (JSM) project as well as in a regular scientific research project. For projects see: https://jsmgroningen.nl/ or contact Aukje van der Zee, secretary of the department of Epidemiology (secretariaatepi umcg.nl).

Registration as Epidemiologist A/B

To become a registered epidemiologist, a candidate must follow a structured curriculum of education and training in epidemiology. You can register as a Junior Epidemiological Researcher at Master’s level (Epidemiologist A) or you can register as a Senior Scientific Epidemiological Researcher at PhD level (Epidemiologist B)l.

Supervision

The training is supervised by two epidemiology programme directors, prof.dr. G.H. de Bock, and one vacancy and by a recognised epidemiologist B. For an overview of all recognised epidemiologists B, see http://www.smbwo.nl/erkenningen-per-richting/.

Registration as Epidemologist A

When you work on a research project at master level, and you are (co) supervised by a recognised epidemiologist B, you can apply for the training program.

Please download the following forms LINK TO EPI A FORM (Dutch) or LINK TO EPI A FORM (English) and ExampleTeaching program A. You can fill in this form together with your recognised epidemiologist B supervisor. When the form is completed, or when you have questions, you can contact Anita Vermue, secretary of the department of Epidemiology (secretariaatepi umcg.nl). The proces is supervised by the programme director.

When a definitive training plan is determined, this will be signed by both the programme director and the senior epidemiologist who will supervise you during the training. You are responsible for ensuring the form is sent to the Netherlands Epidemiological Society (Vereniging voor Epidemiologie; VvE) and for sending a copy to the secretary of the epidemiology department. Registration as a Epidemiologist A is done by the VvE.

Registration as Epidemologist B

When you work on a PhD project, and you are (co) supervised by a recognised epidemiologist B, you can apply for the training program.

Please download the following form LINK TO EPI B FORM. You can fill in this form together with your recognised epidemiologist B supervisor. When the form is completed, or when you have questions, you can contact Anita Vermue, secretary of the department of Epidemiology (secretariaatepi umcg.nl). Registration as an Epidemiologist B is done by the Foundation for Medical Biological Scientific Research (Stichting Medisch Biologisch Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek; SMBWO). This trajectory has been formally accredited by the VvE.

When to apply

Application for registration should be done in the first year of the training. However, for PhD students with a 4-year position, there is an option to start the application in their second year. Without an early start and a clearly predefined programme, the appropriate level of training and epidemiological research cannot be guaranteed.

When your application has been approved

After your application has been approved by the VvE, you can enter the UMCG training programme.
