NAHSS experience by Cas Klatte: Business and Pleasure
Currently, I am in Hong Kong participating in the Netherlands-Asia Honours Summer School (NAHSS) program. The NAHSS offers 100 excellent students the opportunity to experience Asia. These students are separated over four cities: Taipei, Chengdu, Beijing and Hong Kong. I am currently with a group of 32 students in the latter. The program consists of cultural -, business – and academic elements, which are interconnected. Given the rise of China within Asia, I think it is important to gain a comprehensive understanding of these three elements. In this short blog, I will discuss last week and try to show how the NAHSS helps you to expand your knowledge on these aspects.
Currently, I am doing a project for the company Nationale-Nederlanden. The aim of the project is to find ways in which Hong Kong corporates aim to keep their employees vital and motivated to work. Last Monday, we had an interview at the Rabobank with the Chief HR to discuss which measures they take. So far, I have learned a lot from this project. It is not only a great way to gain more in-depth knowledge on how Hong Kong’s corporates operate, the multi-disciplinary nature of our project team is also really insightful.
On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we follow classes at the Chinese University Hong Kong. My first class is always from 9:30am till 12:15 which is a course in Urban Sustainabiliy. The second course starts at 15:30 and ends at 17:15, so you have a very long lunch break in which we usually sit and relax with friends. The courses are not that intensive, but offers a nice way to advance your knowledge on relevant Asian subjects. The campus on which you stay is well organized and offers a lot of facilities, such as a swimming pool, canteens and a fitness room.
The weekends are usually reserved for cultural tours and company visits. Yesterday we enjoyed the ‘Hong Kong Island Tour’, we were picked up by busses and were shown some major sights in Hong Kong. After the tour, we went back home and dressed up formally since we had a company visit at ABN Amro at the International Commerce Centre. After the company visit we had drinks together with ABM Amro’s employees (see picture).
At this moment, five wonderful weeks in Hong Kong have already been passed and I enjoyed it a lot. The comprehensive program and in-depth knowledge that I have gained on China is certainly a gift. Next week we will go to Shanghai for a business week, which is organized for all the 100 students.
