Arjan Sterken

Arjan Sterken

I am a Research Master student, and I work mainly on comparative mythology. My main academic interests are structuralism, semiotics, linguistics, and ancient and Indian religions, especially Vedic Hinduism.

During the academic year 2016/2017, I have been teaching assistant of the CSRCA Director Dr. Stefania Travagnin in her BA course ‘Women in Buddhism’, and contributed to writing the index of her edited volume Religion and Media in China: Insights and Case Studies in the Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan (Routledge, 2016). I also helped in the organization of the talks of the Colloquium on Asian Religions at the CSRCA.

As a Research Master student I'm working on Buddhist metaphysics. The academic fields that mainly interest me are philosophy of religion, Japanese religion, syncretism, and conceptual analysis, in particular the analysis of the religion/secular binary.

During this second semester of the 2016/2017 academic year, I am doing a traineeship at the CSRCA under the supervision of Dr. Stefania Travagnin. My major task is the organisation of the International Symposium on Religion and the Secular in Japan (scheduled on 19 May 2017). I am in charge of the scientific contents, all the logistics of the event, I contribute an introductory paper and also edit a special issue of the CSRCA Newsletter.
