While the immune system in most cases does not play a causative role in degenerative diseases of the brain, it is becoming increasingly clear that immune signaling can influence the pathogenesis of these diseases. However, both beneficial and detrimental effects of immune signaling have been reported. This research aims to investigate how immune signaling is involved in neurodegeneration, and how manipulation of signaling may improve disease symptoms.
We are a newly established group, and for human disease models we use the fruit fly Drosophila Melanogaster human disease models, a genetic model organism used in a wide array of biological fields.
The research questions we aim to investigate are:
I Neuro-immune Signaling
- Which immune cells are involved in neurodegenerative diseases, and when?
- How does interfering with immune signaling influence the pathogenesis of these diseases?
II Immune Signaling
- Investigation of novel signaling molecules in innate immune signaling
