Sustainability of the Arctic Anthropocene

The Arctic is believed to be a remote wilderness, but all parts have been heavily impacted by human activities, starting with prehistoric hunting. Most of the research of the Arctic Centre is interdisciplinary and relates to the central theme 'past, present and future human-nature-relationships in changing polar environments'. We want to understand the human impacts on nature from an historical perspective to have a better understanding of the current socio-ecological systems in order to plan and implement sustainable futures.

Research of the Arctic Centre is part of Sustainable Society one of the three main focus areas of the University of Groningen.
