To promote the advancement of talented international researchers in the university, the University of Groningen offers a prestigious fellowship programme, named after Rosalind Franklin, whose X-ray studies of DNA were crucial to determining its structure. The Faculty of Law will recruit two Rosalind Franklin Fellows. Successful candidates will set up their own research project(s) in the area of their choice, including funds to support a PhD project, and will be expected to attract external funding. They will also contribute to the international teaching programs within the faculty.
1. Requirements
The fellowships are open for candidates who are not staff members of the University of Groningen.
Research
- The candidate must have an exemplary research record, as demonstrated by her doctoral dissertation and by publications in international top journals of legal research.
- The candidate must have experience in various working environments, for example a postdoc period abroad.
- The candidate must enjoy international recognition and independence as demonstrated by contributions to international meetings and co-operation (e.g. joint publications, the organization of academic meetings and/or editorships).
- The candidate must have successfully applied for external funding for own research and has been awarded at least one substantial grant.
- The candidate should preferably have been involved in supervising at least one PhD student.
Teaching
- The candidate must have relevant teaching experience.
- The candidate must within a reasonable period of time contribute in such a way to courses taught at the faculty that the teaching duties will cover at most 33% of the appointment.
General
- The candidate has a PhD, and at least three years experience as a post doc.
- The candidate presents a challenging and innovative research proposal (3-5 pages).
- The candidate must have demonstrable organizational qualities.
- A candidate who is not a native speaker of English must be proficient in English to level C1/C2.
- A candidate who is not a native Dutch speaker must be prepared to learn Dutch.
Candidates are required to submit:
- a letter of application
- a curriculum vitae, including a complete list of publications
- up to five keywords describing the research area
- a three-to-five page statement of research accomplishments and future research goals

2. Selection
On the basis of these documents, the faculty committee, consisting of the Dean, the Director of Research, the administrative Director of Research, two professors of relevant areas of law, a research master student and a personnel advisor, will pre-select outstanding candidates for a first round of interviews.
- The candidates invited for an interview will be asked to provide copies of two to three key publications
- The invited candidates might be asked to give a lecture for the committee and other interested parties.
- If necessary an assessment may be part of the procedure, and references may be requested.
The committee will make a recommendation to the Faculty Board. After approval, the Faculty Board will send the recommendation on to the Central University Committee (CUC). The CUC will assess whether or not the candidates match the criteria for a Rosalind Franklin Fellowship, and if so pass on the recommendation to the Board of the University. The Board of the University assigns the fellowships.
