Legal education in Groningen

Law has been taught at the University of Groningen since its foundation in 1614. Legal education in Groningen is known as solid and of high quality. It is, in its content and method, attuned to the fact that the law is changing rapidly and lawyers have to work in an increasingly international environment.

For this reason much attention is given to:

  • studying the system of law
  • legal problem solving
  • understanding and criticizing legal developments
  • international law, European law and comparative law
  • student exchanges and learning abroad

The Faculty provides an active learning environment in which the necessary skills of legal problem solving, legal research, effective legal writing and oral advocacy can be exercised and acquired. In the first two years in many of the courses, part of the teaching is carried out in small groups (25 students). In the third year students have to participate in the Moot Court. In the fourth and last year, students take part in a seminar in legal research.
