Profile

The Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen is a modern, internationally oriented institution which builds on a longstanding tradition of almost four centuries. The Faculty has the ambition to measure itself with the best law faculties in Europe. Advanced systems of quality control have been implemented for a continuous improvement of research and education.

Although the Faculty has grown to become one of the largest law faculties in the Netherlands in the past few years, it has kept its friendly and informal atmosphere and its concern for good relations within its staff and between staff and students.

International

  • The Faculty has close ties with over 60 universities abroad, in and outside Europe.
  • The Faculty gives high priority to the international dimensions of education and research. Each year more than a hundred foreign students stay for a period of study in Groningen. The Faculty offers four specialised LL M programmes in English, and about thirty-five of its degree courses are taught in English.
  • It initiated a project for the development of the European Law School, and offers a consecutive degree programme in Dutch law.
  • The Faculty has been awarded co-funding as a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence and has also been rewarded a Jean Monnet Chair in European law.
  • The Faculty’s Research School organises joint doctoral research projects with foreign universities, exchange programmes for junior and senior researchers, joint seminars, and offers scholarships for foreign candidates for the doctorate in law.

Research

The Faculty stimulates both fundamental legal research and legal research which is related to the needs of society. The Centre for Law, Administration and Society (Centrum voor Recht, Bestuur en Samenleving) was established to improve programming and co-operation. In 1997 it was officially recognised as a national research school by the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences.

Location

The Faculty is housed, together with the Faculty of Arts, in a beautiful, old, renovated and expanded building - the Harmoniegebouw - in the very centre of the city, close to the main university buildings such as the Academiegebouw and the University Library.
