Heymans Institute

The Heymans Institute for Psychological Research was named after Gerard Heymans, who founded in 1892 in Groningen the first psychological laboratory in The Netherlands. Heymans was also ahead of his time by developing a three-dimensional model of personality, that has been very influential, and the value of which has recently been acknowledged more and more. The dual legacy of Heymans - the emphasis on experimental methods and on individual differences - characterizes today still research within the Heymans Institute.

The institute was founded to integrate and strengthen psychological research within the Department of Psychology at the University of Groningen.
