Teaching style

In Dutch higher education, great value is attached to independence, individual opinions and teamwork. Knowledge is considered quantifiable and thus measurable. Study programmes are carefully defined and highly structured. Students are expected to make an active contribution and work independently. The main role of the teaching staff is to assemble and structure the truths and facts that make up the body of knowledge. Students themselves must make sure that they absorb knowledge and actively filter it, thereby making it their own.

Student-centred
The teaching style provides students with the attention and freedom they need to develop their own opinions and creativity in applying their newly acquired knowledge.

Groundbreaking learning system
The Netherlands has received international acclaim for its groundbreaking problem-based learning system, training students to analyse and solve problems independently through emphasis on self-study and self-discipline.

Teamwork
A large portion of all study programmes is dedicated to writing papers, working in groups to analyse and solve specific problems, acquiring practical work experience through internships and conducting experiments in laboratories.
