The University of Groningen offers various types of programmes:
Bachelor’s degree programmes
Bachelor’s degree programmes are 3-year, 180 ECTS credits undergraduate programmes that students can enter after completing their pre-university/secondary school studies. After completing a Bachelor's degree programme, students are awarded a Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Arts (BA), or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree, depending on the discipline. Bachelor’s degrees give access to a regular Master’s degree programme or to a Research Master’s degree programme.
Master’s degree programmes
Master’s degree programmes are postgraduate programmes that students can enter after completing their Bachelor’s degree programme. After completing a Master's degree programme, students are awarded a Master of Science (MSc), Master of Arts (MA), or Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree, depending on the discipline. MSc/MA programmes can be 1-year (60 ECTS credit), 1½-year (90 ECTS credit), 2-year (120 ECTS credit) or even 3-year (180 ECTS credit) programmes. MSc/MA/LL.M. degrees allow holders to apply for a PhD programme.
Research Master’s degree programmes
Research Master’s degree programmes are 2-year, 120 ECTS postgraduate programmes offered by one of our Graduate Schools. They are designed primarily for highly talented, motivated and ambitious students who are interested in pursuing a career in scientific research. A Research Master can be an excellent preparation for a career in research-oriented positions in the public or private sector. Also, holders of this degree are well equipped for further study and training for a PhD thesis. Talented students can write their PhD proposal as part of their Research Master’s degree. Research Master’s programmes accept only a limited number of students and admission is selective.
Erasmus Mundus European Master programmes
The Erasmus Mundus Programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education which promotes the European Union as a centre of excellence in learning around the world. Erasmus Mundus Master programmes constitute the central component around which Erasmus Mundus is built. They are high-quality integrated courses at master’s level offered by a consortium of at least three universities in at least three different European countries. The courses must be "integrated", which means that they must foresee a study period in at least two of the three universities and that they must lead to the award of a recognised double, multiple or joint diploma. The Erasmus Mundus Programme provides EU-funded scholarships for third country nationals participating in Erasmus Mundus Master programmes.
With a degree from Groningen, students can be confident that they will have the required skills and theoretical grounding to suit the demands of their chosen profession or research path.
