How does the Online Application system of the University of Groningen work?
Through the Online Application system you can apply to all degree programmes of the University of Groningen, fill in your personal details, programme details, and upload the required documents.
In case you are unable to use this system, please send an email requesting a paper application form to the (Faculty) Admissions Office.
PLEASE NOTE: applying by mail will take considerably longer than online application.
Who should apply through this system?
1) All international students who are seeking admission to

a BA/BSc/LLB programme
-
an MA/MSc/LLM programme
-
or a Research Master's programme (includes also Top Master Programmes).
2) All students with the Dutch nationality,
seeking admission to one of our degree programmes, based on a
diploma obtained abroad.
PLEASE NOTE: all students with the Dutch nationality and a Dutch diploma are kindly requested to use Studielink for their application.
PLEASE NOTE: all students seeking admission to the Erasmus Mundus Master's programme Evolutionary Biology or Biomedical Engineering are kindly requested to find the application forms through the following links:

What documents do you need to apply?

A photocopy of your valid passport
If you are already living in the Netherlands, please enclose proof of registration at your local Town Hall (“uittreksel gemeentelijke basisadministratie”) GBA and/or copy of your residence permit (both sides).

Original certified copies
of your higher education diplomas and grade transcripts (in Dutch, English, French, or German).
If you still need to obtain your bachelor’s degree, please mention your (expected) graduation date and include certified copies of all transcripts obtained to date.

Proof of sufficient English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL). If you apply for a programme taught in Dutch: a copy of your NT2 results

2 academic letters of recommendation (only for Master programmes)

Depending on the programme the application deadlines for programmes starting in September range from:

Step by step: the application, admission, and registration process
The purpose of the application is to determine whether you can be admitted to the programme of your choice. If you are admitted, you will receive a formal statement of admission, which you need to finalise your registration, and a registration package.
The following will explain what happens after you’ve applied online, filled out all the details, and after you’ve uploaded all the required forms:
Step 1: receiving the online application

You will receive an email confirming that we have received your application

The relevant Admissions Office will screen your application for completeness

You will receive an email informing you about the result of this screening.
Please note that we need time to process your application. If you have not received this email from us within 4 weeks, please contact the relevant Admissions Office.
Step 2: admission

If complete, your application is reviewed by the relevant Admissions Office and the programme you have applied to. The final decision on admissibility is made by the Exam Board of the programme.

A formal statement regarding admission will be sent to you by the Admissions Office.
The statement will specify whether you are admitted, conditionally admitted, or not admitted (in case of conditional admission, the conditions are specified).

If you are admitted you will receive a registration package from the Admissions Office together with the formal statement of admission.
Step 3: registration
The final step to take before you can start your studies, is to finalise your official registration as a student at the University of Groningen.
If you are admitted, you will receive a registration package with instructions and a registration form. After completing the registration form and paying your tuition fee, you are officially a student at our university.
