Estate housesGroningen estate houses are generally stone houses built in the Middle Ages where the rich could flee in times of danger. In later centuries, these stone houses were extended and turned into beautiful homes, called ‘borgen’ in Dutch. Unfortunately, many of them were demolished, leaving only 16 out of approximately 200. The most famous three are open to the public; other Groningen estate houses are open during restricted hours or can be rented for weddings, conferences, etc. The Allersmaborg has recently become the Alumni House for the University of Groningen.
