Residence permit for students

A residence permit is a document that states your identity, your nationality and your right to reside in the Netherlands. It is issued with a specific purpose in mind. Currently a residence permit is usually issued for the duration of one year and may be extended on a year-by-year basis if all conditions are complied with.

Required documents for students from Country Group II

The ISD can apply for residence permits for students from Country Group II on their behalf before they have arrived in the Netherlands. This will make it possible for the residence permit card to have been prepared for you and ready to be picked up almost immediately after your arrival.

Students from Country Group II will be informed by e-mail concerning the documents that are required for their residence permit application, among which:

  • Copy of passport - page(s) with personal details and period of validity only, unless you have been in the Netherlands before, in which case you need to copy all pages of your passport.
  • Proof of sufficient financial means (at least € 810 per month).
  • A signed Appendix Photocard that bears a passport photo that meets the Dutch requirements for passport photography.

PLEASE NOTE: students from Country Group II will have to pay € 600 for their residence permit.

Required documents for students from Country Group  III and IV

The ISD can apply for residence permits for students from Country Group III and IV on their behalf before they have arrived in the Netherlands. They will apply for the residence permit together with the MVV using a special procedure, which will make it possible for the residence permit card to have been prepared for you and ready to be picked up almost immediately after your arrival

Students from Country Group III and IV will be informed by e-mail by either the ISD or their faculty’s international office concerning the documents that are required for their MVV and residence permit application, among which:

  • Copy of passport - page(s) with personal details and period of validity only, unless you have been in the Netherlands before, in which case you need to copy all pages of your passport.
  • Proof of sufficient financial means (at least € 810 per month).
  • A signed Appendix Photocard that bears a passport photo that meets the Dutch requirements for passport photography.
  • Students from these groups need to take a Tuberculosis Test. The ISD can assist in obtaining an appointment at the Public Health Department. The results of the test will be sent to the Immigration Office directly.

PLEASE NOTE: students from Country Group III and IV will have to pay € 300 for their visa and € 300 for their residence permit.

International guests who need an MVV but arrive in the Netherlands without one can expect serious problems.
