International Political Economy
IntroductionWhat is actually going on when international rating agencies like Moody’s can partly dictate the behavior and political decisions of the European Union? When American home owners are forced on a large scale to forfeit their mortgages with catastrophic global consequences? Here International Political Economics comes into play to try and explain the historically unprecedented interwoven international markets and the consequences for states and societies. States, markets and societiesSince the 1970s, International Political Economy (IPE) developed as a more or less independent (sub-) discipline within International Relations. It focuses on the interaction between states, markets and societies and how their mutual relations affect the behaviour of other actors. Its principle aim is to explain the dynamics of the three building blocks and, in doing so, it heavily relies upon methods used in economics and political science. Within this, special attention will be paid to the relations between states, markets and society in developing countries.
