Fortress of Bourtange

Close to the German border lies a unique Groninger place of interest: the Fortress of Bourtange. Present and past go perfectly together in this beautiful village, surrounded by ramparts. The village of Bourtange includes centuries-old defences and bastions. In recent years, the village has been restored to its old glory, and includes drawbridges, officers’ houses, and cannons, all of which takes you back to the year 1742 when the bulwark was completed. The old houses in the village are now used as museums, providing an image of 18th century life in the fortified town. See www.bourtange.nl
