Culture: independent and equal
The Netherlands can be described as a 'self-service country': the Dutch try to manage most things themselves which makes them very independent and organized. Another distinctive character of the Dutch people is their openness and direct way of acting and speaking, besides being basically reserved. Asking questions is rarely considered rude but simply the best way to find out what you want to know.
Religion: freedom of religious belief is a fundamental right
Alongside the usual church towers and synagogues, the minarets of mosques can increasingly be seen in the larger Dutch cities. Modern Dutch society is very secular and not many Dutch people identify with an organized religion. However, you will have plenty of opportunities to practice your own religion if you wish. Shops, restaurants and places of worship cater to every ethnic background.
