Page content: Within the framework of the internationalization of higher education, competition to attract top foreign students and personnel is increasing between universities. A strong international profile is essential in order to be in with a chance. This is why there is great interest in international ranking lists. QS World University RankingsThe annual QS World University Rankings is an influential ranking list of higher education institutions. The University of Groningen features at number 115 in a list of more than 600 universities. According to the QS Subject Rankings, the University of Groningen belongs to the global top-100 in the areas of Linguistics (67), Sociology (71), Philosophy (96) and History (98). > QS World University Rankings 2011-2012 Academic Ranking of World UniversitiesThe Academic Ranking of World Universities is a global top-500, published annually by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The University of Groningen can be found in a joint 102nd-150th place globally. A closer analysis of the item scores reveals that the University is actually in 103rd place. For two areas the University of Groningen belongs to the top-100: Chemistry (place 51-75) and Economics/Business (place 76-100). > ARWU THE World University RankingsThe Britisch magazine Times Higher Education has been publishing the QS Ranking above since 2005. But they have changed their methodes and researcher radically to Thomson Reuters, mostly known for his citation database 'Web of Knowledge'. In the first edition (2010) there were some big errors in the results, but most of them have been repaired in THE-WUR 2011. The University of Groningen now takes the 134th place in the top-500. Leiden RankingIn 2010, the Leiden Centre for Science and Technology Studies published an updated version of the ‘The Leiden Ranking’. This ranking includes both a European and World top-250, based on five alternative criteria derived from the Web of Science. Based on the most important of these (the ‘alternative crown indicator’), the University of Groningen takes the 39th place in Europe and the 100th place globally. Our relative citation impact turns out to be 1.37 times higher than the global average. > CWTS CHE Excellence RankingAccording to the German Centre for Higher Education, the University of Groningen is a member of the so-called Excellence Group of best universities in Europe in five of seven investigated disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology and Economics. The Excellence Group consists of 56 members, which is 1.3 per cent of the approximately 4500 institutions for higher education in Europe. This ranking is published in cooperation with the German newspaper Die Zeit. Essential Science Indicators (ESI) Citation ImpactThe ESI of Thomson Reuters is a publicly accessible web application based on the best-known citation database, the ISI Web of Science. Of the 100 universities with the most publications, the University of Groningen is in the 56th spot, based on an average of 22 fields of the ESI. In the fields of Chemistry and Material Science, the University belongs to the top 4% globally and in Plant & Animal Science, Environment/Ecology, Microbiology and Physics to the top 15-33%. > The University of Groningen Ranking of Research Universities WebometricsThe Webometrics is a list of rankings composed by the Spanish Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIS) and is primarily based on the number and the distribution of scientific publications on the internet. Globally, the University of Groningen takes the 152nd position and in Europe the 36th. Taiwan Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World UniversitiesSince 2007 The Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT) has been publishing a global top 500 of universities, based on eight criteria derived from Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science citation impact indications. In the 2011 ranking, the University of Groningen is in the 90th place. The best scores are in the areas of Clinical Medicine (62), Social Sciences (77), Natural Sciences (92), Life Sciences (95) and in the subareas of Material Science (77) and Chemistry (87). > HEEACT Best Places to Work ranking listThe University of Groningen marks the 5th place in the global ranking of Best Places to Work in Academia 2011, published by the American journal The Scientist. The University of Groningen owes this high listing to the Rosalind Franklin Fellowship Programme, among others.
