Management
Inge Hutter is professor of demography and Head of the Department of Demography, and in that position she has the overall responsibility for teaching, research and management in the department.
Moreover, she is vice-dean of the Faculty of Spatial Sciences - she is responsible for research in the faculty.
Inge is coordinator of the MSc in Population Studies and the Research Master Regional Studies.
Research
Inge Hutter is director of URSI, the Urban and Regional Studies Institute, that coordinates research projects in the field of urban and regional planning, demography and human and economic geography within the Faculty of Spatial Sciences at the University of Groningen.
Regarding demographic research, Inge Hutter is coordinator of HERA (HEalthy reproduction: Research for Action), a research programme on reproductive health. HERA is a collaboration between the PRC and NIDI (Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute). For HERA she works one day a week at NIDI in The Hague. A strong focus in her research work are cultural aspects of reproductive health.
Within HERA, Inge Hutter conducts research on reproductive health in South India in collaboration with the J.S.S. Institute of Economic Research (IER) Dharwad in Karnataka. The goal of the project is to contribute to the new Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) approach of the Government of India by translating the research results into a health educational campaign, called Spandana. Spandana is conducted in cooperation with IER Dharwad and the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Dharwad branch. Community participation, empowerment and informed choice are major concepts applied in Spandana. In addition, Inge Hutter develops and supervises Ph.D. research in the area of reproductive health, mainly in India and Bangladesh.
Teaching
Inge Hutter is coordinator of the MSc in Population Studies and main lecturer of the courses 'Theories of Demographic Behaviour', 'The Research Process', 'Qualitative Research Methods' and 'The population debate'.
She is also coordinator of the Research Master Human Geography, Planning and Demography: Regional Studies - Spaces and Places, Analysis and Intervention.
Moreover, Inge Hutter is main lecturer in the courses 'Demografie1' and 'Methoden & Technieken Geografisch en Planologisch Onderzoek', taught in the Bachelor Human Geography and the Bachelor Environmental and Infrastructure Planning.
In cooperation with IER Dharwad, she has been working on the development of a Diploma Course on Reproductive Health Management at Karnatak University in Dharwad, Karnataka. Inge Hutter does consulting work in the field of reproductive health and is also involved in the translation of research results into health educational campaigns in cooperation with local Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
Background
Inge Hutter graduated in 1988 in Non-Western Demography (University of Groningen) and Cultural Anthropology (Utrecht University). She received her PhD cum laude in 1994. Her dissertation concerned the nutrition of women during pregnancy and the well-being of their children in rural South India. Inge was appointed professor of demography as of September 1st 2004. On 21 June 2005, she held her inaugural lecture entitled 'Cultuur als perspectief' (Culture as perspective).
