Course code: GEMPST4
Coordination: Professor Inge Hutter, Dr Fanny Janssen
Lecturer: Professor Inge Hutter
Studyload: 5 EC
Period: Semester 2a
Objectives
The course uses demographic theories, as taught in Theories of Demographic Behaviour, as a basis to monitor and evaluate policies and programmes on a particular significant social issue such as health, ageing or international migration. Students acquire a deeper understanding of population policies and programmes. Furthermore, students learn about the design, monitoring and evaluation of population / reproductive health projects.
Content
In this course students learn to assess population projects in the broader context of international population policies, on the basis of theories learned in the course Theories of Demographic Behaviour. Demographic data and research are related to policy making at national and international levels. Population programmes are analysed and evaluated.
Planning
This year, due to the sabbatical of Professor Hutter, the course consists of one introductory lecture (4 hours). On the basis of the information provided in this introductory lecture and on the basis of the literature that is required for this course, the students work on an individual paper regarding policies or interventions and the topic of their Master thesis (if already known). The assignment for this course can thus be seen as part of the preparation of the Master thesis.
Assessment
The course is assessed by:
-
an individual paper on population policies and intervention in field of topic of Master's thesis
-
presentation of the paper
