Representations of Feringa’s work at Noorderlicht International Photo Festival 2017

18 September 2017

The 24th edition of the Noorderlicht International Photo Festival will take place from 22 October to 26 November 2017. The work of over 70 photographers will be on show at seven locations in Groningen, Eelde and Assen. The theme is ‘NUCLEUS – Imagining Science’. A fascinating part of NUCLEUS is the collaboration between the University of Groningen and Noorderlicht. Photographer Jos Jansen has tried to capture the essence of the work of Nobel Prize winner Prof. Ben Feringa.

Art and science

Now in its 27th year, Noorderlicht has earned a reputation for showing socially committed narrative photography. The theme this year is science. Artists and scientists often ask themselves the same questions and are driven by many of the same principles, such as originality, creativity and an open mind. In NUCLEUS the two disciplines engage in a dialogue. Science is both subject and source of inspiration in the festival. The desire of humankind to understand and control the world has already generated an unfathomable volume of knowledge that has permeated our lives. This process, already known as the ‘fourth industrial revolution’, will only intensify in years to come.

Ben Feringa

The collaboration with the University of Groningen is an important part of NUCLEUS. The University and Noorderlicht invited photographer Jos Jansen to capture the essence of the work of Prof. Ben Feringa, winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry last year. Feringa, professor of Organic Chemistry in Groningen, is considered one of the world’s most creative chemists. Will this creativity be visible in the photos from Mr. Jansen? We can see it with our own eyes from 22 October to 26 November in the Der Aa-Kerk.

Pop-up expo

Prior to the Noorderlicht Photo Festival, a selection of photos from the NUCLEUS exhibition is on show in a small pop-up exhibition in the University of Groningen’s Bernouilliborg building. The exhibition, which includes one of Jos Jansen’s photos of Feringa’s work, runs from 19 September to 2 October. It is on the first floor and opens daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The visiting address is: Nijenborgh 9 (Zernike), 9747 AG, Groningen
