Thijmen Calis (BSc E&BE) best student of the University of Groningen!

Winner of GUF-100 prize and Aart Bosman Student Excellence award

Thijmen Calis (20), bachelor student of Economics and Business Economics , has won the Aart Bosman Student Excellence Award 2015 for the best student of the year at the University of Groningen. He was chosen from the nine winners of the GUF-100 prizes, which are awarded to the most excellent student from each faculty. The prizes were granted on Friday 3 July 2015 during the Summer Ceremony, which officially marks the end of the academic year.

Each GUF-100 prize is worth € 2,500 and Calis receives another € 2,500 as the winner of the Aart Bosman Student Excellence Award.

Summa cum laude

According to professor Bert Schoonbeek, programme director of E&BE, “Thijmen is a very talented, hard-working student with a strong interest in economics issues, in particular in developing countries. He has an average grade of 8.9 after completing 165 EC of the Economics and Business Economics programme. During his study abroad at the Chinese University in Hong Kong he also received very high grades.” Thijmen just finished his BSc thesis with a 9 and has the opportunity to graduate summa cum laude this summer.

Scientific paper presentation

Besides his Bachelor in Economics and Business Economics, Thijmen follows the honours Bachelor, a selective additional programme for top performing students. He organized a successful seminar about Bitcoin and participated actively in a research project about the role of microfinance in India. The work has resulted in a scientific paper, together with his supervisor professor Lensink, and colleagues Gosh and Meesters. Thijmen will present the paper at the European Microfinance Conference in Geneva this year.


Children’s project in Manila

In addition to his studies, Thijmen Calis has been student-assistant for various courses and is tutoring courses in mathematics, economics and M&O to high school students in his home town, since 2010.
In light of his interest in problems faced by the developing world, Thijmen went to work via the AIESEC Kick4Ed project in Manila, Philippines. There he taught children basic elementary courses in English, mathematics and science and he provided football training.

Based on his outstanding study results, combined with the extracurricular activities Thijmen Calis was awarded the GUF-100 prize.

GUF-100 prizes and Excellence Award

The GUF-100 prizes for excellent students were first awarded in 1993 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Groningen University Fund (GUF). Prizes were awarded every five years until 2010, and yearly since then. The winner of the Excellence Award is chosen from among the winners of the GUF-100 prizes. Each GUF-100 prize is worth € 2,500 and the winner of the Aart Bosman Student Excellence Award receives another € 2,500.
