Ben Feringa, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Groningen, has been awarded the 2015 Arthur C. Cope Late Career Scholars Award. President Tom Barton of the American Chemical Society praises Feringa ‘for groundbreaking research on dynamic molecular systems and stereochemistry, specifically the design of light-driven rotary molecular motors and phosphoramidites for asymmetric catalysis’.

‘This is fantastic news,’ says Feringa. ‘It’s amazing to win such a prestigious prize in the USA as a foreign scientist. The American Chemical Society is the largest scientific organization in the world. The prize is a great recognition for our entire research group and for the work we’ve done in the past ten to fifteen years.’ Feringa will be honoured at the Awards Ceremony in August 2015.

Research grant

The award consists of $5,000, a certificate and a $40,000 unrestricted research grant to be assigned by the recipient to any university or non-profit institution. The recipient is required to deliver an award’s address at the Arthur C. Cope Symposium. The recipient may also be invited to make a presentation at an ACS regional meeting during the year after the Cope Scholar Award Symposium.
