Batstra, prof. dr. Laura
Laura Batstra (1973) is hoogleraar orthopedagogiek (Medicalisation of behavioral, educational and societal problems) aan de Faculteit Gedrags- & Maatschappijwetenschappen. Zij studeerde in 1997 (cum laude) af in de psychologie. Daarna werkte ze als psycholoog in het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen aan verschillende projecten op het gebied van de indirecte patiëntenzorg. Eind 2004 promoveerde zij op het proefschrift ‘Difficult birth, difficult life?’ Ook werkte ze als behandelend psycholoog in een instelling voor Kinder- en Jeugdpsychiatrie. In 2012 verscheen van haar het boek ‘Hoe voorkom je ADHD? Door de diagnose niet te stellen’, waarin ze pleit voor een andere aanpak van adhd-problematiek.
Volgens Batstra zijn we in de afgelopen jaren flink doorgeschoten in het stoornisdenken. “Als mensen klachten ervaren die eigenlijk gewoon bij het leven horen, dan denken we te snel dat er iets mis is. En dat er individuele medische hulp moet komen. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan een kind wat gewoon een beetje druk is, maar ADHD medicatie krijgt voorgeschreven. Of iemand die het label ‘complexe rouw’ opgeplakt krijgt omdat hij te lang verdriet om een overleden dierbare zou hebben. Het is niet dat ik deze klachten wil ontkennen of bagatelliseren maar ik vind dat we kritisch moeten zijn of ze wel thuishoren in de psychiatrie en of we ze met medicijnen moeten behandelen.”
Batstra is als onderzoeker betrokken bij het project Druk & Dwars. In dat verband heeft ze subsidie ontvangen voor een project waarbij kinderfeestjes voor de hele klas georganiseerd worden, om sociale uitsluiting van kinderen tegen te gaan. Ze nam het initiatief voor Festival Apaart, voor meer tolerantie voor mensen die ‘anders’ zijn. En ze bedacht een plan voor klassikale kinderfeestjes.
