Four members of the Young Academy Groningen of the University of Groningen have created vlogs together with regional newspaper Dagblad van het Noorden. In these videos, they discuss their research and its social relevance in a comprehensible and entertaining manner. The second vlog in the weekly series features cosmologist and theoretical physicist Diederik Roest, who talks about the expansion of the universe.

Diederik Roest specializes in the mathematical properties of string theory. A complex subject, but Roest enjoys making complex science more accessible and more popular. He demonstrated his favourite physics test on the popular Dutch talk show De Wereld Draait Door, for example, and he often visits schools to talk about his research. As he himself enthusiastically put it in UG video magazine Unifocus : ‘I really enjoy explaining things’. Not only does Roest enjoy explaining, he also believes in its importance due to the abstract nature of fundamental research. His aim is to explain what makes fundamental research so interesting and what drives scientists to engage in this type of research.

Roest is one of the four members of the Young Academy Groningen (YAG) who have created a vlog. Young Academy Groningen is a group of young talented academics from the University of Groningen. Its members come from a variety of disciplines, in order to stimulate interdisciplinary research. In addition, they aim to enthuse and inform a broad audience about science. The next two vlogs in the series will be created by Michel Vols and Dorina Buda.
