Abstract"A solution looking for a problem" - that was the initial reaction when 50 years ago the first laser saw the light. Nobody could have imagined that today lasers can be found everywhere, from a state-of-the-art research lab to a supermarket scanner (if you don't believe me, look around to find out how many things are made by, or with a laser). In this Colloquium I will sketch the historical developments which led to the discovery of the laser, and discuss the modern trends leading us into the future.
