Abstract
In recent years the activity in the research on 'cold molecules' has increased rapidly. Atomic physicists are eager to expand the experiments that have worked so well using cold atoms; chemists are dreaming of studying completely controlled reactions. Together researchers from a variety of backgrounds are developing the required theoretical and experimental tools. In this colloquium an overview of the promises and challenges of the research on cold molecules is given, with special attention for the possibilities to test fundamental interactions and symmetries using cold molecules.
