Abstract
Einstein’s theory of relativity predicts the concept of gravitational waves. As massive objects move in space, they send out ripples across the Universe that are actually distortions of the fabric of space-time. The detectors LIGO and Virgo are in place to detect these gravitational waves as they sweep past the Earth. Their principal instruments are Michelson interferometers with 2 - 4 km long optical cavities in the arms. An overview is presented of the Virgo experiment.
